If you are considering building a backyard chicken coop, there are several
considerations before you get started. Of course you want it to be attractive and
affordable but more so, your chicken coop should protect your chickens from
predators, maintain their health and as a benefit to you and your family, enable your chickens to deliver more delicious egg.

The first time I started building a backyard chicken coop, about the only think I knew was I wanted a place the chickens could roost and lay eggs. As a kid I would visit my cousin and my uncle raised chickens in commercial chicken houses, sold the eggs and then the chickens too. But this did not however, make me an expert when I started building my own coop.

I have a very vivid memory of being in the chicken coop as a small kid and having a rooster come at me with spurs drawn. This big ole rooster we had thought I was after his hens or something and just started flapping and making a big fuss and jumping at me.

My dad picked me up, ran out of the chicken coop and put me down. Next I know we were having chicken 'n dumplins for dinner. He had cme out of the house with his shotgun and... well the rest is history.

Thinking back on this I can remember our chicken coop was nothing more than some post with chicken wire nailed to them and a small lean-to shelter. If you have yardbirds then you really do need a better shelter for them than what we had as a kid.

Your chickens need shelter from the elements of weather and varmits, a place to roost, nesting areas and easy access. So before you throw up some make shift lean-to take a look at how you can have a first class shelter with these chicken coop plans.

If you are considering getting some chickens and letting them run around in your backyard, you may want to reconsider. Though it sounds like fun, if you live in the country and your chickens are simply running around all over the place, you will soon find yourself with no chickens.

The varmits will find them quite tasty and your backyard chickens will soon become a dinning hall for all of them. This is one of the most important reasons you need a set of good chicken coop plans so that you can build a durable and varmit proof coop.

This also give you a place to put their nests with easy access to the eggs rather than finding them (or not finding them) scattered around in grassy areas. Snakes will find the eggs before you do if the chickens are left to roam.
